One of the biggest video game launches of the year is already here, and many gamers are about to explore the last slice of Sanctuary in Diablo 4. The latest action RPG in the legendary franchise is the biggest, boldest and the baddest of the series, but it seems that the developers behind the game are not waiting for the launch to work on what comes next.
In an interview with Kinda Funny Games, which you can watch below, Diablo producer Rod Fergusson answered tons of questions about the game’s live service model, cosmetic microtransactions and quarterly seasons, and so much more. It’s a great interview with a lot of great information, but one moment in particular is bound to tickle enthusiastic Diablo players.
During the interview, Fergusson revealed that the Blizzard Entertainment team hasn’t rested on its laurels during the Diablo 4 launch cycle: far from it, the developers responsible for creating one of the best Xbox games of the year so far are already working on the later stages of Diablo 4.
Built on a live service model, Diablo 4 will constantly expand post-launch with new content, changes and improvements, and much more. The game will be supported for years after launch, aiming to give players plenty of reasons to keep coming back to the game time and time again. This has already started with Diablo 4’s first major patch update. However, building a healthy and sustainable live service model for a game is no small task.
“You have to build your team and your structure around a way that you can do it sustainably, because you’re always shipping a certain way,” Fergusson said during the interview. “As I sit here, we’re launching the main game, we’re finishing season one, we’re working on season two, we’re working on expansion one, we’re kicking off expansion two — all of that is happening right now.” and we haven’t even launched the game.”
That’s right, in addition to the Diablo 4 Battle Pass and purely cosmetic microtransactions, revolving around themed quarterly seasons, Blizzard is already working two DLC expansions for Diablo 4. There isn’t much information on what these expansions will include, but players can at least rest assured that Diablo 4’s story content won’t end when the campaign credits roll. Fergusson also hinted that future expansions and seasons will give the team the opportunity to implement features that weren’t present in the full game, and used runewords from Diablo 2: Resurrected as a specific example.
There’s also no timeline on when we can expect these expansions, but the fact that Blizzard is already working on Diablo 4’s second expansion suggests that the first may not be. mashed potato far from. Diablo 4’s main campaign contains dozens of hours of content, so players still have a long way to go before they’re ready for even more. Players will also be able to interact with themed season content starting in mid-July, which will provide countless opportunities to earn unique cosmetic rewards.
