IonQ demonstrates the world’s first models of quantum cognition

COLLEGE PARK, Md., June 01, 2023–(BUSINESS WIRE)–IonQ (NYSE: IONQ), a leader in the field of quantum computing, today announced results of its early research on applying quantum computers to shape human cognition. The recently published paper describes the world’s first publicly known method in which basic human cognition models were run on quantum hardware, paving the way for the potential development of improved decision models that mimic human thought.

Conducted in collaboration with an international team of quantum researchers, the research paper represents a starting point for the development of quantum circuits that implement mathematical models of cognition, encoding mental states into qubit registers and cognitive operations using different gates and measurements. Since the 1960s, cognitive psychologists have sought to understand the correlation between how questions are asked and how a participant would answer them. The concept of quantum probability effectively describes some of these relationships, however it was only recently that quantum hardware reached the point where models of quantum probability could be studied and tested.

IonQ’s research demonstrates how quantum loops can represent basic human cognition between two related concepts, classifying how the proximity of one proposition can affect another more than it would if they had been isolated. In the future, more complex loops have the potential to lead to better decision models that can be used to anticipate election results, uncover unconscious biases, or produce increasingly personalized ads. A blog post further explaining the research methodology and findings is available here.

“The potential impact of quantum computers that can emulate human decision-making cannot be overstated as such a future approaches reality,” said Peter Chapman, CEO and President of IonQ. “This breakthrough holds immense potential for fields such as generative AI, enabling the creation of sophisticated and nuanced AI systems capable of generating highly realistic and creative results. With the unmatched computational power of quantum computing, today’s research poses the crucial foundations for the development of an intricate network of correlations that will fuel the search for future innovations.”

Today’s research further demonstrates IonQ’s position as a global leader and innovator in the field of quantum computing. Whether using quantum hardware to model human cognition or developing quantum networks, IonQ continues to build its reputation as a world-class quantum computing company, promoting the most powerful commercially available quantum system on the market and signing partnerships with organizations and government agencies, including Airbus, GE, Dow Chemistry, Hyundai Motors, and the United States Air Force Research Laboratory.
